One of our gripes with Assassin’s Creed Unity was that you would go to all that effort to find a chest, only to be met with a message telling you that you had to use the companion app to unlock it. Well, those messages won’t appear anymore thanks to the title’s latest patch.
The patch removes the need to download and play Unity’s mobile companion app to unlock blue chests dotted around the game’s map. These contain money, equipment, and the custom outfit of Assassin's Creed 1 hero Altaïr.
Players also won’t need to log in to Ubisoft's Initiates web service to unlock gold chests. These gold chests appeared as players levelled up and feature outfits from the series' other main protagonists, as well as money.
The Initiatives web service was plagued by connection issues and inaccuracy when tracking user progress. Ubisoft pulled the service down before Christmas for maintenance and it did not return. With this latest move, it looks unlikely that it will be resumed.
The latest Assassin’s Creed Unity patch is now available on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One and will be released on PC later today.
