Beyond Good & Evil from Ubisoft was a game kind of before its time. Mixing open world action with beat em up mechanics and the chance to take delightful photos of everything in the world, it was a title that never got the foothold it deserved when it was released on consoles and PC in 2003.
After 11 years, the sequel never seemed all that likely, making the less than frequent teases all the more painful for fans. We had a cinematic teaser featuring the pig-like Pey'j back in 2008. Hints have been dropped here and there, especially from the original director Michel Ancel but nothing concrete ever materialised.
Honestly, at this point BG&2 seems like vapourware and Ancel's comments more like the ravings of a creative who doesn't know where to focus his time. It's not unusual for directors to fixate on projects that never materialise or try to keep fans happy with the bare minimum of information.
Or maybe I'm just bitter because I feel like I could have been playing in the idyll of Hillys years ago!
Anyway, the most recent word is that Ancel is moving away from Ubisoft into a new company called Wild Sheep. There's no word on what project they're working on and they don't even have a website as far as I can tell. Ubisoft's response is fairly typically quixotic at this point:
"It’s still far too early to give many details about this new title, but what we can say is that while Michel and the team at Ubisoft Montpellier are working with the core tenets of BG&E, they’re developing something that aspires to push past the boundaries of a proverbial sequel and leverages next-gen technologies to deliver a truly surprising, innovative and exceptional game. The entire team is excited about the direction this extremely ambitious project is taking, and we’ll have more to share later, as it progresses.”
Which tells us nothing much. There might be a game, sometime, but honestlyI think its nothing but a pipe dream at this stage. Either that or it'll be some episodic indie title.
I would play this version though.
