With the release of Mario Kart 8 mere weeks away, marking the series' high definition debut, Nintendo has unveiled a huge amount of new information on the title, including one tidbit that's literally got us bounding around the office with joy: the dreaded Blue Shell can now be destroyed for the first time ever.
For so long the bane of the series, the Blue Shell has proven to be one of the most enduring and frustrating icons of gaming; a device to nefarious that it's capable of destroying the times and podium dreams of even the most accomplished of Mario Kart players. But an end is in sight, boys and girls, because thanks to Mario Kart 8's brand new Super Horn, the Blue Shell is no longer the unavoidable assassin it once was.
The Super Horn item allows players to destroy any incoming items by emitting a shockwave that surrounds their vehicle, putting paid to the advances of green, red and blue shells, as well as any other potential hazards. Obviously, though, the Super Horn will be a rare item, and it's not going to be something you'll want to waste if you do happen across one during your race, so there's an additional tactical layer introduced as players will have to make the decision to hold onto it, meaning they have to manage without any other items until they utilize it, or to use it so that they can free up their item slot. crafty stuff from Nintendo we're sure you'll agree.
Other new additions include Baby Rosalina and Pink Gold Peach characters, a new Crazy 8 item, automatically recurring private or public online matches (perfect for agreeing a time with your buddies and not having to worry about who's going to set the lobby up at 8pm on a Tuesday evening, for example), sharable replays andautomatic saving of the last 12 races you've completed,
And as if you needed another reason to pick up the game when it launches on May 30th, players who register the title with Club NIntendo before July 31st will be rewarded with a free download code for one of New Super Mario Bros. U, Wii Party U, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD or Pikmin 3.
