Crysis 3 reveals release date
Plus new web series on the way
Crysis 3 explodes with a new web series, plus a confirmed release date!

We already knew that EA and Crytek’s Crysis 3 was set to debut in February 2013 but we’ve finally got confirmation of an actual date as well as details on a unique cinematic project which is set to kick off this week.

Crysis 3 will debut on Xbox 360 and PS3 on the 19th of February in North America and February 21st in Europe. Using the latest CryENGINE 3 technology, Crytek are intent on presenting the most visually stunning entry in their series to date, while also furthering the near future storyline with a return to the tale of super soldier Prophet.

In 2047, more than 20 years after the previous game, and gravelly voiced Prophet is once again taking on the evil human Cell Corporation forces and the remaining Ceph enemies in the new but familiar environment of the Nanodomes. These massive structure enclose the entirety of New York City which has reverted to its natural state in the intervening decades – the verdant flora reclaiming the districts one street at a time.

The Nanodomes are also host to the Seven Wonders, seven distinct environments which will provide extra challenges for the player, and which also feed into variations in multiplayer. For more insight into the Seven Wonders, Crytek and EA have just announced a brand new web series which will delve into each locale as well as giving you a taste of the action on offer.

They’ve enlisted filmmaker Allen Hughes to put together seven cinematic shorts called the ‘Seven Wonders’ – with the first ‘Hell of a Town’ to debut on the 12th of December. We caught an early glimpse of the short at a press event next week. It starts with Prophet chilling in space before heading into the still somewhat urban centre of New York. There, Prophet comes up against some Cell forces and uses all of the features of the Nanosuit to survive.

The episode mixes brief story elements with first person sections and action not far removed from the actual game. There’s a focus on showing off the impressive graphics on offer and some not very tactical gameplay to be found, before Prophet finds himself in a tight spot.

Hughes is best known as the director (with brother Albert) of flicks like Menace II Society and 2010s rather fun Book of Eli. They also made From Hell, which we won’t talk about. His work on Seven Wonders involved collaborating on storyboards and creative to get across the concept of each distinct area, bringing his own sense of style to Prophet's ultraviolent story.

Check out the teaser trailer for the series below.

The Seven Wonders web series debuts on the 12th of December. Crysis 3 hits consoles and PC from the 19th of February 2013.
