Doom goes old school with newly announced reboot
id Software revealed at QuakeCon 2014 that the next instalment in the Doom franchise will simply be called Doom, and will feature classic weapons, melee combat and no regenerative health.

The title is being developed on id Tech 6 and will be released on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Those in attendance at QuakeCon were given a special sneak peek at it, so here’s what’s known so far.

Doom will feature double jumping; classic weapons like the chainsaw, double-barrel shotgun, chainsaw, rocket launcher and rapid-fire plasma rifle; and there won’t be any regenerating health. RockPaperShotgun also mentioned that levels seem quite linear, though it’s unclear if this is just for the demo.

Meanwhile, multiplayer is described as “fast paced and competitive.” It seems like id Software is going for a classical feel with Doom. Speaking with Polygon, Zenimax's VP of PR and marketing Pete Hines said that the team promises “to meet the very high expectations everyone has for this game and this franchise."
