Anyone who has bought or buys Elite: Dangerous from Frontier’s online shop, or who backed the development on Kickstarter, will soon get a free Steam key.
Frontier’s community manager Edward Lewis is encouraging potential players to buy the game from the developer. In this way, the developer gets all the money rather than losing a chunk of each sale to Valve.
Lewis said, “We always appreciate it when you buy direct from our store because it means we can put more into supporting and developing Elite: Dangerous.” At the same time, he acknowledged that players like to play through Steam.
That’s why Frontier worked with Valve to create a way for players to connect their Steam and Frontier accounts. This system will be implemented soon.
Owners of the game will be able to generate a free Steam key for Elite: Dangerous from May 28th.
Elite: Dangerous launched on Steam in April. The game can be updated via Steam or from the game’s launcher. DLC, however, needs to be purchased from the Elite: Dangerous store.
