Surviving the stone age is about to get even more challenging as Far Cry Primal will soon get a new Survival Mode.
The harder mode arrives as part of a free update on April 12th. It will add permadeath, though you can get a second chance at life that is "replenished at certain completion points."
Players will also have to watch their stamina gauge, which depletes with certain moves and makes you weaker and slower as it ticks down. To refill it, you’ll need to get some rest. The mode also removes the mini-map and strengthens the fog of war.
Curiously, you’ll still be able to fast travel, but it will use up some stamina and food. Other abilities have also been hit; crafting ammo will take a few seconds, you’ll be susceptible to the cold, and the owl won’t be able to do all the hard work for you. Plus, it’ll be harder to tame animals, forcing you to fight some of the more dangerous ones before getting them on your side.
Game director Thomas Simon said, “The most powerful beasts you control, like sabretooths and bears, will not let themselves be tamed so easily. You're going to have to fight them up to the moment that they are at half-life, then bait them and tame them." These beasts will be less powerful when on your side and you won’t be able to instantly revive them if they die.
There won’t be any new achievements or trophies, but apparently there’s a “special reward” awaiting those who complete the game in Survivor mode on expert difficulty with permadeath enabled.
