is coming and it’s bringing some new gameplay elements according to an info page on EA’s website. A variety of first-look screenshots have also been released, but we already expected the game to look good, so we’ll be keeping our expectations in check until we see it in motion.
Intelligence appears to be the name of the game this time around. One of the new changes for FIFA 14 is called Pure Shot, which will transform shooting. Players must be positioned for the perfect strike, but will have the intelligence to “adjust their stride and approach angle to find the best position for hitting the back of the net.” The perfect strike will feel great, but players can also shoot while off-balance or while being hassled by defenders.
The midfield can be a scrappy affair in any match, or completely bypassed if you take the route one approach, but players will now be able to protect the ball while travelling at any speed. Opponents can be out-muscled before receiving the ball ensuring that players have the perfect platform for an attack, defenders can be fended off while in possession of the ball, and players will be able to dictate the pace of the game.
Real ball physics are to be implemented so that players can emulate their real life counterparts by striking from distance, hit low rising shots, or smash in dipping and swerving shots.
EA bookended the gameplay announcements with a paragraph on teammate intelligence indicating that defenders will recognise opportunities to win back possession. However, attacking players have also been enhanced and will try to outsmart their marker. Messi could be a whole new threat this year…
Career mode fans were also given one titbit of information with the announcement of a Global Scouting Network. This gives players the option to develop and refine their own scouting network and evaluate players who could bolster the squad. The hub will also be redesigned to deliver “easy navigation, fewer interruptions and live scouting reports.”
There is still plenty more to find out about the game, from leagues included to the cover star. We're hoping that an announcement about indoor soccer is on the horizon, but we're not going to hold our breath. However, we will go out on a limb and say that FIFA 14 will be released in September!
