I haven't been sure what to think about Firefly Online up to now. Develoopers Quantum Mechanix and Spark Plug Games haven't been all that forthcoming about exactly what it will entail and, for fans of the series, a bad adaptation is worse than none at all.
So this news out of Comic-Con is very encouraging. Apparently, the entire voice cast from the origianal series will be making some kind of appearance in the game. That's everyone from Nathan Fillion as Malcolm Reynolds to Alan Tudky - who will apparently play multiple roles. They're even bringing Michael Fairman back as Niska!
Almost 12 years after the show was unfairly (sniff!) cancelled by Fox, this is likely the only way we're ever going to see these characters together on screen again, especially as they get older. Some of them are a little less busy than they used to be but getting Fillion involved suggests that there's a real commitment to bringing the real feel of Firefly to an online audience.
Quite how they'll be involved in the game is a little more mysterious. In Firefly Online, you play an all new character who gets to design their appearance and the details of every aspect of their ship and go out into a massive role playing world for a grand adventure. Presumably, at some point you'll cross paths with the crew of the Serenity. But now we have to wonder just how much of the game will involve them?
Firefly Online also showed off its first glimpse of gameplay, which looks... not especially flashy. Though its worth watching the vid for a great cameo.
Firefly Online is still being developed and there's no official release date yet. Head to the main site to sign up for updates but I wouldn't expect to see it until well into 2015.
