Joshua Peters (27), who goes by Koopatroopa787 on Twitch, was raided by 10 armed police during a live stream after someone called the police to tell them that shots were fired in the home.
An anonymous caller told the St Cloud Police Department in Minnesota that someone had shot their roommate and were pointing a gun at them. The police then heard two gun shots before the call ended.
Shortly thereafter, armed police arrived at Joshua’s home as he was streaming on Twitch.tv. Viewers heard his mother calling his name before he left the room. He returned 15 minutes later, visibly shaken, to explain that he had been “Swatted.”
This is a “prank” intended to cause the dispatch of armed police to the target’s house. While the objective may be to scare the target, it could result in a more tragic ending.
This is the first Swatting incident that the city had seen, but the police were aware of the practice. Joshua explained to the Guardian that as they were laying on the ground, he said, “I stream on Twich.TV, I’m being Swatted, and someone probably prank-called this.”
After returning to his stream, he addressed his attacker. He said, “I see you posting my address. I had police point a gun at my little brothers because of you. They could have been shot, they could have died. Because you chose to swat my stream. I don’t give a shit about what you have against me, or what I did to you. For that I am at a loss for words. Your gripe is with me. But do not involve my family in this. They don’t deserve it.”
The attacker was not deterred and tried again a few hours later. This time, however, the police checked before rushing into action. St Cloud police department confirmed that an investigation to find Peters’ attacker was underway.
