Games of the week

E3 is a little over a month away, but there are still plenty of games to look forward to in the near future. The first week of May brings two eagerly anticipated titles as well as a host of freebies courtesy of Microsoft’s Games with Gold and Sony’s PlayStation Plus.

Wolfenstein: The Old Blood

May 5th – PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC

Up first is Wolfenstein: The Old Blood. The standalone title is a prequel to last year’s acclaimed The New Order. Players step into the imposing boots of B.J. Blazkowicz in a two-part mission to stop the Nazis. One mission sees him infiltrating Castle Wolfenstein in an attempt to steal the coordinates to General Deathshead’s compound. The second tasks players with stopping an obsessed Nazi archaeologist who is busy exhuming mysterious artefacts that threaten to “unleash a dark and ancient power.”

It’s shaping up nicely. And, to be honest, we’re perfectly happy with more Wolfenstein.

Project Cars

May 8th - PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC

If racing cars is more your speed, Project Cars has likely been on your radar for some time. The game was first scheduled to be released in November, 2014 before being pushed back many times. We’re hoping this has given Slightly Mad Studios more than enough time to tweak and polish every aspect of it. After all, racing fans haven’t really been spoiled for choice recently.

Project Cars will feature an extensive single player career, allowing players to jump right in at any level they choose. For added challenge, you can start racing humble karts and try to make your way to the pinnacle of motorsport. There are also Historic Challenges, which you can accomplish to cement your place in the history books.

The multiplayer side of things should also keep you occupied with lobbies of up to 32 players supported. You’ll be able to race anyone, anywhere in the world, restrict lobbies to just friends, or even set up racing leagues.

CastleStorm: Definitive Edition

May 1st-15th – Xbox One

CastleStorm: Definitive Edition will be free for Xbox Live Gold members from May 1st to May 15th. The indie title is an interesting take on the traditional tower defence game. You’ll have to defend your own castle and troops, while also completing tasks and taking the fight to the enemy. Sometimes, you may even have to take to the frontline yourself to defeat enemy waves.

Each level will rate your performance and you can unlock additional weapons and powers over time. You’ll certainly have plenty of reasons to replay completed levels. This free title should keep you occupied for a while.

Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition

May 4th – PlayStation 4

The side-scrolling Mexican wrestling themed brawler Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition will be free to download for PlayStation Plus subscribers this week. We’re big fans of this game and would highly encourage you to download it.

This is the definitive edition of the game. It adds new levels, powers, challenges and refinements to the original, which was released in 2013. Guacamelee! features a wonderful melee combat system, non-stop action, a healthy dose of humour, and chickens! If you like the classic open-world Metroid-vania style of games, cooperative multiplayer, or you’re looking for an engaging brawler, Guacamelee! is a must-download.
