Minecraft's adding a female model for free

Minecraft’s Steve is possibly one of gaming’s best known characters at this stage thanks to the game’s success. But Mojang has realised that he doesn’t represent Minecraft’s diverse playerbase. A female character, named Alex, will be added to the game for free on Wednesday.

Alex has thinner arms, redder hair, and a ponytail that swoops around her neck. She’s certainly feminine without being overtly so.

Alex first appeared on PC and Mac versions of the game, though her use was randomly assigned. There have been guides created to tell players how to play as a girl, but they often involve paying money or changing the game's code. This proved too complicated for some fans and teachers.

Mojang's founder, Marcus "Notch" Persson, said in 2012 that he had attempted to add a female model. However, he revealed, “Mojang's founder, Marcus "Notch" Persson.” He added: "Blocky things are more masculine." It looks like someone at Mojang managed to crack that challenge.

Minecraft players on PlayStation and Xbox consoles will be able to select Alex from Wednesday. An update for Minecraft’s phone and tablet versions is also planned.
