Monkey Island creator wants to buy IPs from Disney

Disney has decided that it wants nothing more to do with publishing games prompting Monkey Island creator Ron Gilbert to publicly ask if he can purchase the IPs for Monkey Island and Maniac Mansion.

Both franchises are owned by Disney after it acquired LucasArts in 2012. At that time, Gilbert expressed an interest in getting his hands on the IPs, believing that Disney would simply hoard them and never put them to use.

He previously penned a blog outlining what he would like a new Monkey Island to be like. He said that it would be a retro game that harkens back to Monkey Island 1 and 2, and wouldn’t attempt to dumb things down and cater to the masses.

He revealed that, "The only way I would or could make another Monkey Island is if I owned the IP. I've spent too much of my life creating and making things other people own.” However, it seems more likely that Disney will license out IPs, meaning we probably won’t see another Monkey Island from Gilbert.
