New Donkey Kong high score may be unbeatable

Wes Copeland has broken the high score for Donkey Kong once again, which now stands at 1,218,000.

Not only is this an impressive score, but some feel that it won’t be beaten. Copeland played out a perfect game, keeping one Mario alive from the very first level up until the end. His score is 28,200 higher than Robbie Lakeman’s previous arcade record and 11,200 better than Dean Saglio's MAME record.

Writing on Facebook, Copeland announced that this would be his last record score. "I don't believe I can put up a game any higher than this," he wrote. Lakeman also seems to have thrown in the towel. "I'm not lucky enough. Good enough, but not lucky enough," he said.

Back in 2007, the documentary King of Kong put the act of chasing Donkey Kong high scores in the spotlight. At the time, Steve Wiebe and Billy Mitchell battled for the high score with Wiebe putting up a 695,500 score in the documentary. The pair now sit 18th and 19th on the all-time high score list respectively.

You can watch Copeland’s game below. Get comfortable; the full run clocks in at 3 hours, 20 minutes.
