Microsoft began rolling out a newXbox One update to its users last night, with the patch adding several new features including some of the most heavily requested friend system changes.

Although this April update doesn't add the eagerly anticipated ability to use external storage with the machine (we're told that's coming in the very near future, though), it does manage to improve several aspects of the friends system, including introducing the ability to be notified when your friends sign into the Xbox Live service - something that was inexplicably missing from this generation of console when it launched November.

Other improvements include an identifier for friends currently engaged in online multiplayer, a save progress bar, a way to sort your apps and games based on most recent updates, improved GameDVR video quality, 50Hz Blu-ray support, new controller and headset firmware updates annd additional Kinect tuning improvements, further tightening the motion control aspect of the sensor.

It might not be an all-singing, all-dancing update, but it definitely addresses a number of the issues with the friends list that had been getting increasingly irritating as time passed, so we're not going to complaiin.
