No Man's Sky players arrange a meetup but can't see each other

With 18,446,744,073,709,551,616 planets to discover and explore, it always seemed unlikely that No Man’s Sky players would happen upon one another. But apparently, even if you defy those odds and find another player, you may not be able to see them in-game.

A player by the name of TheSadCactus noticed that he’d landed on a planet that had been discovered by another player. Naturally, he wanted to meet Psytokat and sent a message to arrange a meetup. Both players took to Twitch to stream their game as they attempted to meet at a designated point.

After making their way there, the end result was underwhelming. Neither player was able to see the other.

In a 2014 interview with Game Informer, Hello Games’ Sean Murray said that “you can see other characters, and they can see you.” However, more recently, he has been telling players that No Man’s Sky is not a multiplayer game.

Sean Murray has tweeted about this, but hasn’t really provided any answers as to why these players weren’t able to see each other. In a series of tweets, Murray said that two players finding each other has “blown my mind.” He added, “We added a 'scan for other players' in the Galactic Map to try to encourage this happening. We wanted it to happen - but the first day?”

He also noted that the game’s servers are being taxed heavily by the number of people playing. Perhaps that has something to do with why these players couldn’t see each other.
