While hundreds of thousands of gamers were left disappointed when they booted up Diablo III to be greeted by an Error 37 message, others have used the incident to their advantage and poked fun at the eagerly anticipated release. Indie developer Clockstone is selling Greed: Black Border for €1, down from €4.49, with the coupon code “error37”. To rub more salt in the wound, Greed: Black Border is a third person hack ‘n’ slash title in the same vein as Diablo III.

For dates and events of significance, designers are quick to set to work on t-shirt designs. “I Shot JR” was turned into a t-shirt, Kony 2012 got a new promotional angle and now-successful football clubs have a subset of supporters who wear shirts emblazoned with the question, “Where were you when we were bad?” Diablo III’s Error 37 message has already earned itself a variety of t-shirts ranging from the simple logo with Error 37 overlayed to the t-shirt of remembrance.

Eve Online couldn’t help itself from joining in with a less-than-subtle message. The greeting on the login page read, “37…3007…315300. It’s code for ‘Play EVE. Servers are up. Login is fine’.”

Of course, some had nothing better to do in the downtime than weave Error 37 into popular memes. One in particular which stands out read, “That awkward moment when the servers are too full to play your single player game.” There are times when you just have to laugh. Of course, others have been less amused by the outage and have sought refunds and threatened lawsuits. Like other potential lawsuits raised by internet users, we are sure this will blow over shortly.
