Players will be able to hold the threat of both of their character’s Ultras against their opponent in Ultra Street Fighter IV, while the Focus attack has also been modified. Previously, players would have to choose between their character’s Ultras before the match began, but in Ultra Street Fighter IV, they will be able to choose “Ultra Combo Double” and use either Ultra as they feel best suits a given situation. The tradeoff is that the Ultra will not do as much damage as if you had selected one or the other.

Meanwhile, a Red Focus Attack has been added which can absorb multiple attacks, but it will cost you some Super meter. This attack will be identifiable by its red glow and, just like a regular Focus Attack, can be dash cancelled so you can break through a wall that someone is trying to put up. However, it is prone to the same properties as a regular Focus Attack, so characters can still be thrown and armour breaking attacks will still result in the sound of shattered glass and a world of pain for your character.

Capcom employee, and competitive fighting game player, Peter “ComboFiend” Rosas took to the Capcom blog to explain how these changes will impact on gameplay. With regards to the Ultra Combo Double addition, he said that it will give players new ways to “press your opponent, limit their options, and expand your fighting strategies.” The Red Focus Attack, Rosas said, will give you more defensive options, but it will also allow people a route through EX Fireballs and the likes if they can predict their opponent’s behaviours.
