It’s not often I open a review of a Mario game by using the word “disappointment”, but this is precisely what the Wii rerelease of Super Mario All Stars is in my eyes. Not because they’ve somehow managed to break some of the greatest games ever made, because they really, really haven’t – such a thing just isn’t possible! However, I really can’t help feeling that this has been something of a missed opportunity.

You know the games and you’ve played them, so I’m not going to go into them here – they’re brilliant and we all know it. What I will talk about is the fact that Nintendo haven’t actually added anything decent to the game here. It’s exactly the same as the SNES version (including 4:3 screen ratio, bizarrely) with absolutely nothing in place to take advantage of the additional space available on the DVD.
Yes it comes with a CD and some literature but really Nintendo, you should have done so much more than stick what is essentially the ROM of the SNES game on an overpriced disc. If you’re really stuck for the games, or are feeling super nostalgic, then maybe at a push this is going to be worth it, but otherwise just buy the games via the Virtual Console.
