The Order: 1886 is almost ready to bow on PlayStation 4, and as the first big console exclusive release of 2015, it's going to be getting a lot of attention.
Early press was far from enthusiastic but the game has been gaining ground in recent weeks as more information is leaking out and, importantly, players are getting hands on with actual final code. One of the rumours which was floating around was that the game could be completed in a very short amount of time, something less than 10 hours, which seems quite short for a title which doesn't feature any kind of multiplayer mode.
Now it seems some players have managed to get their hands on full copies of the game, and playthrough times are significantly longer - try 18 hours long. In this case, that was playing the game on its hardest difficulty and this Reddit user posted some of his impressions from that experience.
"What can I say? Game is amazingly well-crafted in practically all aspects. Gameplay is tight, visuals are amazing and oh boy, alternate London setting is just overwhelming. Yes, the cinematic feeling is there from framing to lighting to narrative, but the gameplay is as good as any other good old classic TPS game, even better. I'm a big fan of Gears Of War, loved all four entries (Judgment too, had a blast playing it a year ago), but.. this.. THE ORDER 1886, is the superior game. For me, it is the defining TPS of this generation, can't see any similar game doing better in the next few years at least. Kinda bitting my tongue here but, get ready for plenty of surprises because non of the trailers tell much."
That all sounds very positive indeed, especially about the story having plenty of surprises and the gameplay standing up to the best of the genre. If so, a lot of this content was hidden for the preview that we played, which is an interesting strategy be developers Ready at Dawn - maybe its better to allow players to discover things for the first time rather than having them spoiled.
The same user goes on to say a few more things which might be considered spoilery, as well as giving praise to the soundtrack of the game, which is always great to hear.
The Order: 1886 comes exclusively to PS4 on the 20th of February 2015.
