Warhammer End Times Looks Like the Dark Messiah Sequel That Never Was

Remember Dark Messiah of Might and Magic? You probably don't...

Originally released to PC in 2006, it was a first person stab-em-up developed by Arkane Studios - who would go on to make Dishonored. And lo it was wonderful, with some really satisfying melee combat (you could even see your feet!), parkour stuff, enjoyable magic, fun puzzles and the ability to kick enemies into sharp spikes over and over and over...

Seriously if you managed to miss it (like most people) there isn't a better first person swords-on-flesh combat game out there, and you can pick it up on Steam in a sale for chump change. But why am I talking about Dark Messiah? Because the long awaited sequel might finally be here.

Sort of...

Warhammer End Times - Vermintide may not sound at all like Dark Messiah and it may have a story which sees a team of heroes working together to save he city of Ubersreik from hordes of Skaven, all bound up in the lore of Warhammer. But its in the glimpse of the gameplay that I felt the first stirrings of a genetic link to Arkane's kick-em-up, there's just something about the physicality of those blows, the swaying of the screen - hell even the dagger looks overwhelmingly familiar. Check out the gameplay tease.

That's some mighty fine smashing there. Of course Vermintide is a different game in many ways, with intense four player co-op and a mixture of melee and shooty bits that looks like it could be a lot of fun, especially with plenty of enemies on screen. It's in development by Swedish outfit Fatshark who previously released War of the Roses and Escape Dead Island.

Warhammer End Times - Vermintide is targeting a late 2015 release on Xbox One, PS4 and PC.
