Atari: Game Over will be released this fall and is the first part of Microsoft’s documentary series Signal to Noise.
Atari released its E.T. tie-in game in 1982 after a five week development cycle. The game was a disaster, panned by critics and players alike. It was so bad that Atari resorted to burying thousands of unsold copies of it in a landfill in Alamogordo, New Mexico.
This documentary tells the tale of Atari, the build up to this eagerly anticipated game, and the aftermath. It features interviews with the creator of the game, Howard Warshaw, other Atari employees, and people involved with the excavation of the landfill site earlier this year.
Atari: Game Over was produced by Xbox Entertainment Studios, which Microsoft announced it was shutting down. The Signal to Noise series, Halo: Nightfall, and Quantum Break will not be affected by this decision.
