U2 frontman
Bono has been voted the most loved member of the band in an online survey of fans in 79 countries. Bono scored almost 40 per cent of the vote, and was followed by guitarist The Edge at 19.8 per cent.
Drummer Larry Mullen was next with 7.7 per cent in the poll of almost 4,000 fans. Bassist Adam Clayton was voted the least popular band member at 7.2 per cent — but some 26 per cent of the voters declared they loved them all equally.
Adam was picked on again as fans debated the band’s biggest fashion mistake. His afro on the October album sleeve was voted their biggest gaffe. Bono’s mullet from 1984 was just behind at 21%. More than 15.7% claimed everything about Popmart was their biggest fashion mistake while 10.6% claimed it was Larry Mullen in drag in the Achtung Baby period.
About 66 percent of fans think
U2 will still be together and making new music for at least the next eight years even though Bono and Adam will turn 60 years old in eight years. The results were down on the last U2 fan survey in 2010 which showed more than 74 percent of survey takers felt the band had at least eight years left.
Bad news for the band was that more than 48% admitted that they had downloaded a U2 album without paying at least once. More bad news is that despite trying to reach young music fans, just 27 percent of the survey takers were under 30 compared to 34% in 2010.
Coldplay was named as fan’s number two favourite artist with 8.2% of the vote according to the poll by at
U2.com. More than 27% of foreign U2 fans admitted travelling to Ireland specifically because of its U2 connection. More than 50% of the respondents were from American and Canada while 8% were from the UK and Italy. Just 2.8% of respondents were from Ireland.
