Aoibhinn Ni Shuilleabhain is jetting to war-torn
Uganda next month to meet families ravaged by years of poverty.
The on-off girlfriend of
Late Late Show host Ryan Tubridy will be representing aid agency
Trocaire in the African country and promoting its annual Lenten campaign.
The former Rose of Tralee winner (29) said on
Twitter: "Trocaire are helping families and communities in the north of Uganda following years of brutal wars and poverty." The Gaelgoir also said she will be meeting Ugandan boy Daniel Okweng (9) who is the face of this year's current Trocaire
Lenten donation boxes.
She explained: "I'm going to Uganda in weeks to meet the boy pictured on the box." Aoibhinn will also be a judge in a nationwide competition to find a design for the 40th anniversary of the Trocaire box in 2013. Primary school classes across the country are being urged to get creative this Lent and Trocaire said the work should be original and reflect the positive work of the charity.
The organisation said classes can create an image, a slogan, a poem or a reflection for their entry and the closing date for receipt of entries is Friday, April 27. Trocaire director Justin Kilcullen said: "For almost 40 years Irish teachers have used the Trocaire box to teach their students about the world in which they live and the injustice faced by communities in the developing world.
"A staggering 925 million people go hungry in our world, but thanks to the efforts of teachers and schools, the poorest and most vulnerable people have never been forgotten by the Irish public and our young people have grown up with a better understanding of the world around them."
