Monae plays tribute to one of her musical heroes in Pepsi MAX advertisement campaign

Their music is not extremely alike but soul and RnB musician Janelle Monae credits David Bowie as one of the “coolest” artists on the scene. The two do share a similar futuristic aesthetic as different as their music can be however. Also his track Heroes is one of her favourites of all time, according to the singer.

As part of Pepsi’s Now Is What You Can Make It campaign, which is tied into The World Cup and filmed in the streets of this year’s host city Rio. In the campaign Soccer legends Robin van Persie, David Luiz, Sergio Ramos, Sergio Agüero, Jack Wilshere and Leo Mess perform football tricks for the camera. Janelle Monae is seen performing as a busker, singing the Heroes track.

The Tightrope singer commented “Heroes' is one of my favourite David Bowie songs, he's just the coolest artist out there, so to be able to cover the song and to pay homage to him is truly a dream.”

She went on to say “''I love everything the film stands for. To me, it is all about that extraordinary burst of courage and passion which can embolden everyday people in a moment of spontaneity, which is also the message of David Bowie's venerable song. I was honoured to join Pepsi for this campaign and remind people that now more than ever, we can all be heroes”.
