Most Shared News Stories on Facebook in 2011: 10 - 1
1: Satellite Photos of Japan, Before and After the Quake and Tsunami (photo gallery)
An article by The New York Times featured a photo gallery of satellite images taken before and after the Japanese earthquake and tsunami. A sliding divide-line allows you to view as much of the before or after shot as you want and the result is quite moving.

2: What teachers really want to tell parents (story)
Ron Clark, a teacher and author, had an article on CNN that revealed new teachers stay in the profession an average of 4.5 years and that one of the main reasons that they throw in the towel is dealing with parents. Ron, who was named American Teacher of the Year, gives some great advice on how a child’s education can be improved by parents working with teaching staff not against them.

3: No, your zodiac sign hasn’t changed (story)
A story appeared in the Minneapolis Star Tribune that suggested that peoples understanding of the Zodiac was off by roughly a month. But CNN came to the rescue, preventing a flood of people getting incorrect star sign tattoos removed, and pointed out that there are two zodiacs, the tropical and the sidereal, and that there always had been. This was obviously a very important issue to many people as it is very similar to item 32.

4: Parents, don’t dress your girls like tramps (story)
This CNN piece by LZ Granderson is a wake up call to parents who bow to their daughters wishes and buy them clothes that are not needed or indeed even suitable for a 10-year-old female. And although it is extremely creepy that popular clothing retailers like Abercrombie & Fitch and Wal-Mart would produce thongs and push-up bras for 10-year-olds it is the parents of these children that are buying these items and thus creating a market for them. It is not the shops fault for selling what their is a demand for, it is the parents fault for creating and encouraging such a demand.

5: Father Daughter Dance Medley (video)
A father and daughter perform a selection of dances at her wedding to all types of music from My Girl to Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It). Big pappa has some moves!

6: At funeral, dog mourns the death of Navy SEAL killed in Afghanistan (story)
This is the story of the relationship between a man and his dog. When Navy SEAL, Jon Tumilson, was sadly killed in Afghanistan the most poignant part of his funeral was the reaction of his dog.

7: You'll freak when you see the new Facebook (CNN)
The news that more changes were coming to Facebook made people incensed, as seems to always be the case. This was the launch of the new Facebook Timeline.

8: Dog in Japan stays by the side of ailing friend in the rubble (Yahoo)
A story demonstrating the ultimate loyalty in dogs. This dog’s friend, another dog, had been hurt in the earthquake, and they stay side by side throughout. Since the original footage, both dogs have been rescued and treated. For a translated transcript of the conversation see here.

9: Giant crocodile captured alive in Philippines (story)
A one-ton saltwater crocodilewas found in Manila, Philippines by local crocodile hunters. According to local crocodile experts, it is the largest crocodile ever caught.

10: New Zodiac Sign Dates: Ophiuchus The 13th Sign? (story)
This is the news of a 13th zodiac sign due to changes in the earth’s alignment. Since the story was initially published, it has been revealed that this is old news, known since about 130 B.C.
