Today is Robert Downey Jr's 49th birthday, with the legend born on the 4th of April 1965.From early success, his personal demons dragged him into years of rehab and even incarceration - with few stars ever able to find their way back.
But RDJ didn't just manage to sidle back into showbiz, he became one of the biggest superstars on the planet, eventually stepping into the shoes of the Marvel character of Tony Stark and pulling down more than $50 million for his part in 2012's The Avengers.
It has been an incredible journey, taking in a wide variety of roles and even an Oscar nomination and BAFTA win for Chaplin in 1992. Titles like Less Than Zero, Natural Born Killers, Black and White, The Singing Detective, Gothika and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang show his range, with the last film essentially confirming the smarmy suit he was going to wear for his most famous outings as Stark.
And it all started almost 45 years ago, in a film written and directed by his father Robert Downey Sr.1970's Pound is an absurd comedy where actors play a group of dogs waiting to be adopted, that includes a then 5 year old RDJ who turns up as a puppy. And its fair to say his attitude was already completely in place - check out his expression in this clip.
And as an extra bonus, here's my personal favourite moment from his amazing career.
Happy Birthday, RDJ!
