Whedon comments on the Avengers extra dimension and post conversion

Joss Whedon comments as Disney announces an extra dimension for The Avengers.

Disney recently confirmed that their epic superhero mash up, The Avengers, will be arriving in cinemas in 3D in May 2012. It’s not that much of a surprise, given the release of both Thor and Captain America in 3D this year but, like those two titles, The Avengers will be post converted to the format.

It’s not an ideal solution, as anyone who has seen a post converted movie will attest, but the process has improved from the days of Clash of the Titans, though I can’t say that any moments in either Thor or Captain American really impressed me with their dimensionality.

But in Whedon we trust, and it seems he was always aware that the film would be converted, claiming that he shot the film with an eye for 3D. He was also given the option to shoot with 3D cameras but chose not to as they limited his choices.

Commenting to JoBlo after the announcement, Whedon was keen to address the perceived issues with the format: “The Avengers isn't obnoxiously 3D. "There's no, 'Oh look, we're going to spend 20 minutes going through this tunnel because it's in 3D!' And no one is pointing at the screen the entire time. But it's an action movie. Things tend to hurtle toward the screen anyway."

It remains to be seen how the final result will turn out but it’s clear that 3D isn’t going anywhere for the time being, and it certainly won’t be disappearing from the Marvel stable. All things considered, if Whedon delivers on even a fraction of the potential of The Avengers, I don’t think we’re going to care very much about just how three dimensional Thor’s hammer looks.

The Avengers is in cinemas in May 2012.
