Andy Serkis to Direct Jungle Book Movie
English actor to turn his hand to directing...

Best known for his sterling work in the likes of The Lord of the Rings and Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Andy Serkis is not a man you'd immediately think of when asked for suggestions as to who should direct a planned live action version of children's classic The Jungle Book, but that doesn't seem to have swayed Warner Bros. who have snapped him up to make his directorial debut for the studio.

The Hollywood Reporter has claimed that the Englishman has officially signed up for the project, replacing the briefly-attached Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, and beating out Ron Howard who was also apparently in the frame.

As is usually the case when it comes to public domain story adaptations, Warner aren't the only ones putting together a live-action movie based on the work of Rudyard Kipling, with Disney already well under way in their own venture, which will be helmed by Jon Favreau and will feature Idris Elba providing the voice for Shera Khan.

Although it sounds a bit crazy to put Serkis up against someone as experienced as Favreau, the fact that Warner wants to stick closely to the original material than Disney, who'll likely be adapting their own classic animated version, could potentially make him a good fit - especially if they need any help teaching whoever's going to be playing Mowgli to move in a more animalistic manner.
