In The Equalizer, Denzel Washington hands ou vigilante justice when he gets dragged into the criminal underworld after years out of the game. He's a man with certain skills and he uses them to great effect against his enemies. But its not about gunplay, this justice is meted out with his bare hands.
And that causes some trouble when it comes to actually translating it to screen, how many ways are there to kill a man without just using a gun. It turns out plenty and director Antoine Fuqua had a lot of fun coming up with creative ways to help baddies expire on screen.
"They’re fun, it’s fun to come with them. It’s shocking sometimes. Denzel always says ‘you’re a sick man!’ Most of it comes out of meeting with guys who do that for a living as far as battle, war, Navy SEALS, SAS, those types of guys. And to discuss what they would do in a room like that or what they would possibly use if they had to."
Fuqua says he basically just sat down in a room with guys who have had to improvise in real life, had a beer and talked about how they might possible react in these situations. He learned: "basically everything is weapon as far as they’re concerned, there’s nothing off limits. And they know the human anatomy better than most of us, all of our soft spots…"
That's pretty scary stuff, but it makes for some great moments in the film. Especially when Denzel finds himself in a huge homewares store!
