Apple’s chief designer Jony Ive gave his two cents to Star Wars VII: The Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams regarding the lightsaber’s design and we’ll see the result of the discussion in the upcoming flick.
According to a lengthy profile from The New Yorker, the pair met at a dinner party. Abrams said that Ive made “very specific” suggestions about the design of lightsabers. Apparently, the end result in the film will “reflect those thoughts.
Ive can’t be credited, or blamed depending on your point of view, for the distinctive lightsaber spotted in the trailer for Star Wars VII: The Force Awakens. Instead, Ive says, he suggested that the traditional Jedi weapon should be “less precise, and just a little bit more spitty.” This will, according to Ive,make them “more analog and more primitive, and I think, in that way, somehow more ominous.”
So, bear that in mind when you’re watching Star Wars VII later this year. There’s a little piece of Apple in there.
