Thrills, chills and laughs at movie theatres this weekend

April is almost over and the summer is well and truly here – it won’t be long before we’re swamped with the excess of tentpole movies, striving to squeeze every last cent from audiences before clearing the way for the next release.

This week sees the arrival of the first major studio release of the year, Marvel Studio’s Thor. It’s the best the comic book house has released so far, even if it can be mistaken for yet another feature length trailer for next year’s The Avenger – currently being directed by one of our favourite people in the world, Joss Whedon. Check out our Thor review here.

If you’re looking for something with a more economical budget you can’t do better than Insidious, which cost roughly 150 times less than Kenneth Branagh’s superhero flick. It’s the latest from director James Wan and writer Leigh Whannell– the creators of the Saw series and sees them taking a step back from gore and creepy puppets to focus on psychological chills. And for the most part it does a great job; head to our review for details and you can also read our interview with Wan and Whannell.

Also on release this week is Cedar Rapids, starring Ed Helms from The American Office and The Hangover. The trailer may recall Todd Phillip’s 2009 comedy smash hit but the reality throws a solid dollop of drama into the mix of this story about a mild mannered insurance salesman who lets loose at a convention.

That’s your lot on general release this week. You can also catch French Cold War movie Farewell in limited engagements.

Check back next week when we’ll have the skinny on the likes of Robert Pattinson’s Water for Elephants, Priest and Saoirse Ronan kicking ass to the sounds of the Chemical Brothers in Hannah.
