Shot in Northern Ireland, The Survivalist is the first film by local director Stephen Fingleton and has received attention at the British Independent Film Awards and Tribeca. Now the thriller has also been nominated for Outstanding Debut at the BAFTAs for 2016.
The film is set in a future where the world has been brought low, society has collapsed and each and every person must fend for themselves. A loner (Martin McCann) is making his own life in the wilderness when he chances upon two women. He gives them shelter but at a price.
Reviews for the film out of festival screenings have been strong, with a sense of the end of the world evoked on a low budget and attention paid to the stark tone and scenery. It's great to see genre efforts being made on a small budget and all evidence suggests filmmaker Fingleton is one to watch for the future.
Happily, The Survivalist will debut in Irish cinemas on the 12th of February so we'll all get to see the startling vision the cast and crew have crafted.
