During a recent interview about black comedy
Sightseers, Click’s Daniel Anderson got talking to director
Ben Wheatley about his upcoming projects. This is what ensued.
The celebrated
Kill List filmmaker is set to expand his reach to America in the near future with creature feature
Freakshift but before all that is something completely different –
A Field in England.
“Yea we’re editing that at the moment,”
Wheately says. “That’s about as far as you can get from
Sightseers as possible. It’s a black and white art film about the English Civil War where people… there’s quite a lot of penises in it but there’s also quite a lot of muskets. So similar things. And quite a lot of mushroom taking and hallucinogenic kind of shenanigans. With
Michael Smiley (of
Kill List and
Down Terrace) and
ReeceShearsmith.”
We quickly asked him about his American filmmaking debut – about a future world where all sorts of strange creatures exist. “And
Freakshift is like a big American sci-fi thing but that’s kind of next year at some point, we’re just putting that together at the moment.”
So there’s plenty on the way from
Wheatley, and a fitting mix of niche products with a move towards the mainstream. You can watch the full interview with
Wheatley plus the cast of
Sightseers below.
