Ok so it's still a pretty strange state of affairs that a sequel to Blade Runner is in the works, but if you have been hotly anticipating the new film there's good news - it's coming even sooner than expected!
News has just reached us that the sequel will be arriving in cinemas in October 2017, which is pretty interesting as it was previously tipped for January 2018.
There are a couple of potential reasons and they're all pretty positive. January is a bit of a dumping ground for films so moving it away suggests confidence, while October has been a good month for sci-fi in the past with the likes of Gravity and Interstellar. The move also puts the film in a better place for potential Oscar contention, which isn't totally out of the realms of possibility.
And there's also another element in play, Star Wars. The certainly mammoth Episode VIII will be popping up in cinemas on the 15th of December, 2017 and dominating the box office for weeks after that. So the move makes a lot of sense, and also leaves time for the production to get up to speed.
Blade Runner 2 has a cast including Ryan Gosling and the returning Harrison Ford, and will be directed by Denis Villeneuve (Sicario, Prisoners). We'll have to wait and see how it turns out.
