Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul creator Vince Gilligan is eyeing up a new project; he wants to make a Jack and the Beanstalk movie.
Disney has apparently picked up the rights to Beanstalk, an updated version of the Jack and the Beanstalk fairy tale based on a "detailed outline" written by Gilligan. Deadline reports that the movie will be written by Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul's Tom Schnauz with Gilligan hoping to slot into the director’s chair.
Gilligan has plenty of experience directing for TV, having directed episodes of shows including The X-Files, Breaking Bad, and Better Call Saul. Despite writing for movies such as Home Fries and Hancock, he has yet to direct a feature film.
This project seems to fit in with Disney’s strategy to turn well-known fantasy properties like Alice in Wonderland and Cinderella into live-action projects. We certainly don’t see Gilligan taking a traditional approach to the story of Jack and the Beanstalk. Let’s just hope there’s no cliffhanger right at the end to torture us.
