True to its story about a race of immortal
aliens scotsman dudes (were there any female ones?) the Highlander series just won't die. A cast member has been added to the latest reboot attempt in the form of Guardians of the Galaxy's Dave Bautista.
There have been rumours about a Highlander reboot for years, for almost as long as I've been writing about film - which is awhile. Justin Lin was up for it in 2008 (which would have been well cool) and there was talk of having Queen songs in the film. Later Twilight writer Melissa Rosenberg got involved, Justin Lin ran away and new filmmakers came and went, as did potential lead Ryan Reynolds.
VFX dudeCedric Nicolas-Troyan is now in the director's chair and Bautista would make for a pretty good villain but there's the slight problem of not having anyone to play the hero right now. I think audiences might notice. It's also totally unclear to me that many people are breathlessly awaiting a return to the Highlander franchise, especially as it's arguably been almost 30 years since there was a decent entry. And, apologies everyone, but the 1986 original isn't even that great.
For now, I'd predict we won't ever see this film. I'd love to be proven wrong.
