Selma is a Czech immigrant working in America who has been told that she will be blind within the next year. Determined to prevent the same fate befalling Gene, her son, Selma works tirelessly in a factory to raise the money to pay for an eye operation, helped by co-worker Kathy, and her admirer Jeff. Having raised the necessary funds to pay the doctors, Selma is distraught to find that next door neighbour Bill has stolen her money to pay off his crippling debts.
