In '30s Winnipeg, dotty aristocrat Lady Port-Huntley announces a competition to find the world's saddest music. She invites musicians from around the world to descend on the city to compete for a $25,000 purse. War veteran Fyodor Kent turns up to represent his home country of Canada and he finds himself competing against his two sons. All three men have suffered grief and misery in their life. Will one of them convince Lady Port-Huntley that their lament is the saddest music in the world?
