Divergent has already arrived in cinemas in the United States, chalking up almost $100 million since it debuted at the end of March.
That makes a sequel, based on Veronica Roth's book Insurgent, all but guaranteed, with a production start date already mooted for summer 2014. And the movies likely won't stop there, with a third book- Allegiant - already completed.
We caught up with Divergent star Shailene Woodley recently to talk about what it will be like to be associated with her character - Tris Prior - for years to come and she was quite typically honest about it: "ea I wouldn’t have taken it on if I didn’t feel like I was able to do that. I feel lucky to have brought such a strong woman to life."
Beyond that, the 22 year old also confirmed that she's signed on for multiple sequels, and the number is a bit surprising: "Yea we’re signed on for four if it does well".
So like The Hunger Games and Twilight before it, the Divergent series will have more movie entries than original books. While you can look at this as a callous way to milk more money from audiences (which is at least partly true) it also makes it easier to fit in more of the world the fans have falled in love with and also makes the monumental process of mounting a series of major movies that little bit easier.
There's no word on where the story will be split at this stage but Roth has written a deep and complex world and we're looking forward to spending more time in it.
Diverent arrives in cinemas in Ireland and the UK on the 4th of April 2014.
