In news that's likely to send sci-fi nerds around the globe into a frenzy, Doctor Who actor Matt Smith has been cast in what is said to be a "major role" in the forthcoming Terminator: Genesis.Smith will join other nerd icons including Emilia Clarke from Game of Thrones and Jason Clarke who'll be starring in this summer's Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.
In a statement announcing the addition to the movie's roster, Paramount Pictures and Skydance Productions said:
Smith will play a new character with a strong connection to John Connor, alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jason Clarke, Emilia Clarke, Jai Courtney, J.K. Simmons, Dayo Okeniyi and Byung Hun Lee.
Alan Taylor is directing the film from a screenplay by Laeta Kalogridis and Patrick Lussier. David Ellison and Dana Goldberg of Skydance Productions are producing. Skydance’s Paul Schwake, Annapurna Pictures’ Megan Ellison, Kalogridis and Lussier are executive producing.
According to website Deadline, Smith's role will become increasingly important to the new trilogy in the second and third instalments, although details remain thin on the ground regarding the overall scope of his character.
