When a neglectful father bites the dirt shortly before his daughter is killed he breaks out of hell to save his grand-daughter with the devil’s right hand man hot on his tail.
What’s not to like about Drive Angry. It’s got Nicolas Cage in yet another curious wig powersliding out of the depths of hell to rescue an infant whose been swiped by bad-boy cultist Billy Burke (yes, him from Twilight) while a be-suited William Fichtner gives chase and Amber Heard wears some extremely short shorts. Cue explosions, self aware ridiculousness and lots of things flying at the camera...
Yes, Drive Angry is in 3D but don’t hold that against it – trashy exploitation flicks are the perfect fodder for the extra dimension, as director Lussier already proved with My Bloody Valentine. Drive Angry even goes so far as to loudly proclaim ‘shot in 3D’ in the trailer – suggesting just how fed up audiences have become with shoddy post conversion efforts. There’s nothing wrong with the R-rating from the MPAA either – promising ‘strong brutal violence, grisly images, some graphic sexual content, nudity and pervasive language’.
Cage proved with Kick-Ass that he can play goofy with a plan and we can’t help but love Fichtner, who turns up in the most unlikely of places and always gives his all. We’re expecting a B-movie good time when Drive Angry careens into cinemas in late February.
