Emma Watson has recently addressed rumours that she is to star as the Little Mermaid in the upcoming adaptation to be directed by Lost in Translation’s Sofia Coppola.
The 23-year-old actress is reportedly the number one pick for Coppola in her live-action animation adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen’s 1837 story.
Watson told Variety that she would definitely consider the role stating: “I mean I’d have to read it first … I love Sofia so much.” The Harry Potter actress also admitted that she actually dressed up as Ariel for her fifth birthday.
Watson and Coppola worked together previously on last year’s film The Bling Ring. A source said that: “Sofia wants Emma, and the pair have such respect for each other, it would be very unsurprising if they carry on without each other.”
Coppola is reportedly intending to keep her film true to the story of the original tragic Andersen fairytale in which the broken hearted mermaid commits suicide after her prince marries another woman and not the famous 1989 Disney version.
