Ex Machina promoted at SXSW with fake Tinder profile

Ex Machina promoted at SXSW with fake Tinder profile

Tinder users at the SXSW festival in Austin, Texas over the weekend found themselves intrigued by a beautiful 25-year-old woman by the name of Ava.

Naturally, many of them swiped to match with her. But it turns out that she was simply a profile set up to promote the recently released Ex Machina film.

An AdWeek user matched with Ava and released a screenshot of their conversation. Ava’s picture is actually Swedish actress Alicia Vikander, who plays an artificial intelligence in the movie. And their conversation mirrors the tests conducted in the film. The link that she sends Brock after he passes her test is her Instagram account, which features a photo and a video promoting Ex Machina. The link in her bio points to the film's website.

You have to feel for Brock. He thought he had a genuine match and that this attractive woman found him interesting. Unfortunately, it was all a ruse. It’s certainly a fitting use of a Tinder bot. But we sympathise with those who were caught out by Ava.

Ex Machina is a compelling film that you should definitely check out. We also had the pleasure of sitting down with Domhnall Gleeson during his press rounds for the film.
