We're big fans of Ben Wheatley around these parts. From Down Terrace to High-Rise, via Kill List, Sightseers and the bonkers A Field in England, he's one of the most interesting filmmakers working today.

Ok so High-Rise was a bit of a misfire for the English filmmaker but he's not one to take much of a break with another film already gearing up for release.

Free Fire is set in Boston in 1978 and tells the tale of what happens when an arms deal in an isolated warehouse goes bad. And we mean the kind of bad where two rival gangs with murder on their mind and pieces in their hand get caught up with nowhere else to run.

It's set to be a throwback to the 70s era, with Wheatley referencing Sam Peckinpah's The Getaway as one of the film's which he was influenced by. And the first image has been revealed by Empire.

That's just a glimpse at the starry cast, including Oscar winner Brie Larson, Armie Hammer (rocking a serious beard), Irish fella Cillian Murphy and the always great Michael Smiley.

And there's more, with Jack Reynor, Sharlto Copley and Sam Riley also in the mix. We're going to go ahead and assume that not very many of those fine folks survive until the end, and that a whole mess of bullets are going to be spent to get there.

The film doesn't have an Irish release date yet and it might be a while if Wheatley and co decide to hold the premiere until the Venice or Toronto film festivals.
