Five unmissable movies in May 2016

The summer movie season is almost upon us, with blockbusters galore, and some of them don't even have superheroes in them. Not many we'll admit... here's looking at you Independence Day!

Right now we're taking a look at the month of may and giving you a list of films to look forward to of various sizes. Hopefully there are a few you haven't heard of in the mix, which will provide a little contrast to the huge explosions and serious actors wearing silly costumes.

Green Room - 13/05
Blue Ruin director Jeremy Saulnier is back with his third film, and it's one of the most nail biting thrillers we've ever seen. A punk rock band gets trapped in a venue owned be neo-Nazis led by Patrick Stewart. And then things get really intense. Then more intense. Then so intense you're not really sure if your eyes are going to manage to make the journey. It's blistering stuff, and has to be seen with an audience.

X-Men Apocalypse - 18/05
Bryan Singer directed the first X-Men all the way back in 2000 and this will mark his fourth in the franchise and his last. Which is fitting as it's the end of a cycle for the current cast (we're told) and could well see the end of all things as the team battles the super mutant of the title. Ok so they're probably going to win somehow but it will still be thrilling. With James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Oscar Isaac, Rose Byrne, Sophie Turner, Olivia Munn, Evan Peters and a Wolverine cameo.

Alice Through the Looking Glass - 27/05
Tim Burton's original Alice film was a huge money spinner for Disney and this sequel brings in a new director in James Bobin, who helmed The Muppets. The visuals look more fantastical than ever as an older but still crazy Alice ventures through the looking glass to battle Time itself. Or rather himself. Mia Wasikowska, Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter and Anne Hathaway return, along with Alan Rickman's last ever role.

Love and Friendship - 27/05
Here's a smaller one to seek out. This film is based on Jane Austen's Lady Susan and was shot in Ireland in places like Donabate in early 2015. It's the latest from writer director Whit Stillman and tells the story of a woman in hiding who goes on a quest to get herself and her daughter married. Kate Beckinsale looks to be having a career high with this one, and Stephen Fry, Chloë Sevigny and Xavier Samuel also feature.

Warcraft The Beginning - 30/05
Ok so let's talk about Warcraft. Based on the massive media franchise started with a real time strategy game in 1994, this is a high fantasy tale of Orcs and Humans and a fight for survival. Honestly we're still not sure how this one is going to pan out because it has the potential to be an almighty mess but we're going to cross our fingers and hope. Duncan Jones directs with a cast including Paula Patton, Ben Foster, Dominic Cooper, Toby Kebbell and Ruth Negga. Many under lashings of digital makeup.
