Hugo takes the day, in nominations at least...
UPDATE – The results are all in and it’s a win for Martin Scorsese’s Hugo, which picked up a massive 11 nominations including Best Picture, Best Director and nods for screenplay and a bunch of tech credits. Next up is Michel Hazanavicius’ The Artist with 10, including a deserved nod for the impressive score. Other titles lag behind – Moneyball took 6 and The Descendents a mere 5. Surprises (to us) include Terrence Malick’s Tree of Life in the running for Best Picture and Jonah Hill popping up in the Best Supporting Actor category and not a single sign of Jeff Nicols superior Take Shelter. For shame.
It’s no surprise to see Jessica Chastain get some notice for her multiple roles this year, and she was a delight in The Help. We’d love to see that films Viola Davis take the win as leading actress but she’s got strong competition from Meryl Streep. And while Andy Serkis didn’t get nominated for his amazing performance in Rise of the Planet of the Apes, we’d count on the film to pick up the Oscar for Best Visual Effects.
