Harry Potter and the Cursed Child could be a movie!

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child could be a movie!

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is a new play which continues the story 19 years after the events of The Deathy Hallows. It's currently previewing in London, with a full release planned for the end of July, 2016.

Now, it has emerged that Warner Bros has filed a trademark for Harry Potter and the Cursed Child for other merchandising and also, potentially, a feature film.

Interestingly, the news was broken by Irish Intellectual Property Solicitor Brian Conroy found the filing from the 8th of July, 2016. Now this trademark covers all manner of things including tie in cookies, board games, water squrting toys, hair bands, jumpers, towels, gardening gloves, money clips, coin purses, magazines, amulets, video games and cutlery.

Oh and also:

"Motion picture films featuring comedy, drama, action, adventure and/or animation, and motion picture films for broadcast on television featuring comedy, drama, action, adventure and/or animation; audio video discs, and digital versatile discs featuring music, comedy, drama, action, adventure, and/or animation;"

It's a comprehensive filing, and could be seen as a way for Warner Bros to make sure they don't run into any problems in later years when they want to make a really nice Cursed Child cutlery set. At the same time, Warner Bros makes movies and Harry Potter has been their biggest franchise of all time, so it's reasonable to assume that this is going to happen.

Conroy breaks down the matter in a second blog post which also dives into the trademarks which J.K. Rowling herself owns, and it seems she's going to have to give Warner Bros permission to take over some rights for The Cursed Child. There's a lot to read but it's interesting to see how these laws are put together.

For the moment, The Cursed Child will be playing exclusively at the Palace Theatre, London from the 30th of July, 2016.
