Despite plenty of uncertainty over the fate of Pacific Rim 2, it looks like we finally have confirmation that it's actually happening. And it's picked up quite the lead in the form of John Boyega (Star Wars Episode VII).
According to a report from Deadline, Boyega is to play the son of Stacker Pentecost (Idris Elba). Del Toro said that he was delighted to have Boyega come on board.
In a statement, del Toro said, "I am very proud and happy to welcome John into a fantastic sandbox. The Pacific Rim universe will be reinforced with him as a leading man as it continues to be a multicultural, multi-layered world. ‘The World saving the world’ was our goal and I couldn’t think of a better man for the job."
Del Toro is to produce the film, and has hinted that he's working on a script for a third film, with Steven S. DeKnight directing.
Pacific Rim 2 will start shooting later this year.
