Jon Bernthal, who will soon appear in Daredevil Season 2 in the role of The Punisher, revealed that he and Tom Holland (Spider-Man) teamed up to create audition tapes for their respective roles while working together on Irish medieval thriller, Pilgrimage.
Speaking with the New York Daily News, Bernthal said, “We were making tapes from Ireland in the process of getting him cast in Spider-Man and then he and I made a tape for The Punisher." He added, “During this independent movie that we did in Ireland we were constantly making tapes for Marvel — just acting together.”
This tactic clearly paid off. We will soon see The Punisher face off against Daredevil in the upcoming season on Netflix, while Holland made his debut in the new trailer for Captain America: Civil War. The Punisher wasn't the only person that Holland had in his corner. Chris Hemsworth (Thor) backed him for the role.
Holland e-mailed Hemsworth asking him to put in a good word with those at Marvel. He did, telling Marvel that they wouldn't find a harder working and more appreciative kind of guy. He then told Holland, "I've told them that, so don't prove me wrong." No pressure then.
As for the audition tapes themselves, they exist, but may not see the light of day. “These tapes definitely do exist, you can call Marvel and ask for it, but that’s like breaking into Fort Knox,” Bernthal joked.
Bernthal and Holland are unlikely to appear alongside one another in the Marvel universe, but you can catch them sharing the screen in Pilgrimage, which will be released this year.
